2 trains per hour to/from Leven starting Monday 19th May
One via Kirkcaldy and one via Dunfermline...
The train via Kirkcaldy starts typically around 12 minutes past the hour and the train via Dunfermline starts around 40 minutes past the hour.
But the exact time varies from hour to hour so you are recommended to check the Scotrail timetable at: https://www.scotrail.co.uk/plan-your-journey/timetables
You are looking for the Edinburgh, Fife, Perth and Dundee timetable starting May 2025.
The first weekday bus through Crail - 06:35 on Crail High Street - gets to Leven at 07:35 - where it’s a bit of a dash across to Leven Station for the 07:39 departure via Dunfermline getting to Edinburgh Waverley at 09:06.
Traveline Scotland won’t recommend this journey because it requires more than 5 minutes to be allowed for changing modes of transport - it has you catching the 08:12 and getting to Waverley at 09:23.
If you have an Over 60 or Disabled Concessionary Travel Pass issued by Fife Council you can get train tickets within Fife for £1 single, £2 return - after 09:15 on weekdays or all day at weekends. More details at: https://www.fife.gov.uk/kb/docs/articles/roads,-travel-and-parking/myfife-national-entitlement-card/myfife-travel-benefits
Leven station is unstaffed, so you can only buy these Fife Concessionary tickets on the train - if a station is staffed you must buy such tickets from the station ticket office before boarding the train.
A cheaper way of getting to Edinburgh is to buy your Fife concessionary ticket as far as Inverkeithing - and separately buy an Inverkeithing to Edinburgh full price ticket - if you haven’t bought this ticket before boarding the train in Leven you will need to get off at Inverkeithing and use the ticket machine there to buy the ticket to Edinburgh - you will see from the train timetable that a through train to Edinburgh will be only a few minutes behing the train from Leven…
But, it’s also worth noting that while it typically takes around 2 hours 30 minutes to get from Crail to Edinburgh by bus and train, it also typically takes around 3 hours to get there by bus alone - and if you have a bus pass (including an under 22 pass) - that travel is free…
