Some years ago I started using the term “The Shopping Triangle” for a visit to both Anstruther and St Andrews using the 95 and X60 to visit both places for a quick 15 to 30 minute shop, returning back to Crail about 2 hours after starting the trip.
This was prompted by a day when I had things to do in both Anstruther and St Andrews and needed to visit both as quickly as possible.
At the moment the sensible way to do the trip is to visit Anstruther first - otherwise you end up with an hour in St Andrews and a 3 hour overall trip.
Since the introduction of the X61 Sunday service it is even possible to do the trip on Sundays…
On weekdays, start by taking the 95 which typically passes along Sauchope Crescent about 5 minutes to the hour (09:55-12:55 and 15:55). This bus gets to Anstruther Harbour for 13 minutes past the hour.
You then have until 50 minutes past the hour to do your shopping and the catch the X60 - making sure to catch the bus either at the official Harbour stop (near the public toilets) or a minute later outside the Anstruther Co-op. (As the X60 only stops at limited bus stops nowadays.)
The X60 gets into St Andrews at 10 minutes past the hour for a quick 15 minute shop before catching the 95 at 25 past the hour from the bus station or 28 minutes past the hour from Church Street. (Beware that the Madras College bus shown on this timetable runs at different times on different days.)
On Saturdays the 95 and X60 run more evenly throughout the day:
On Sundays the timetable gives a more even distribution of time between Anstruther and St Andrews with about 30 minutes each:
Catch the 95 from the middle of Crail at about 3 minutes past the hour getting to Anstruther Harbour at 17 minutes past the hour.
Shop for almost 30 minutes as you have until around 45 minutes past the hour before you catch the X61 to St Andrews:
Then you have from 5 past the hour until 35 minutes past the hour to complete your shop in St Andrews:
Enjoy the journey!
