Thursdays 26th December and 2nd January...
...don't have many bus services - but you can still have a day trip to the sales...
We are heading into the holiday season when bus services can be quite confusing.
You might think, for example, that there would be more bus services on Christmas Eve to get you to and from late night church services - or on Hogmanay to get you to and from New Year parties. But, you would be wrong on both counts - bus services on both these days tend to wind down about 9pm.
More details of exactly which Stagecoach buses run on these days are listed on the Stagecoach website at: https://www.stagecoachbus.com/service-updates/serviceupdatesarticle?SituationId=ID-15/11/2024-11:53:18:455
Moffat & Williamson also stop early on these dates - some of their timetables are colour coded to show which buses don’t run: https://moffat-williamson.co.uk/moffat-and-williamson-timetables - but they haven’t colour coded all their timetables, so beware…
You would probably guess correctly that there are no buses on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.
You might think that there would be a fairly normal service on Thursday 26th December and Thursday 2nd January - but you would be wrong again. Moffat & Williamson, for example, don’t run any buses on these days. Stagecoach run a skeleton service - only some services run, and then only for limited hours…
The 95 for example, has a daytime service loosely based on its old (pre-Leven trains) Sunday timetable, and no evening service:
But, this year, for the first time, there is an X61 service between St Andrews and Edinburgh via Anstruther, again loosely based on a Sunday timetable:
It is possible to do a day trip to Glasgow or Edinburgh - departing on the first 95 from Crail at 09:03 and getting back on the last bus through Crail at 19:19. But your shopping time is limited and you need to make sure you catch the last bus back (15:15 from Glasgow, 16:15 from Edinburgh).

The other holiday timetable change to note is that on Friday 27th December, Monday 30th December and Tuesday 31st December most Stagecoach services in Fife run to a SATURDAY timetable.
This means that the first few 95 buses through Crail run EARLIER than they do on a normal weekday:
So, as usual, you need to take care and check that you are looking at the correct timetable when travelling over the holidays…
Best wishes to all our readers for Christmas and for 2025!
